Well, while both styles embody a sense of simplicity and clean lines, contemporary design refers to what’s current and innovative and is often constantly evolving. Unlike other styles that are usually focused on a particular look or period, contemporary style really just refers to what’s happening in the interior design world today. 

In contrast, modern design refers to a specific era (mid-20th century) and is characterised by its minimalism and natural materials. We sat down with Gemma from Studio Gemma to get her expert advice on all things kitchen cabinetry. When we asked the number one piece of advice, she had for someone who is selecting or designing their kitchen cabinetry, we absolutely loved her answer.

“Don’t be afraid to use colour! If I had a dollar for every time a client says something along the lines of -“Oh, I’d really love to do a blue kitchen, but I am worried about property resale value”. They then end up playing it super safe with their colour selections and 9 out of 10 times at project completion wish they had been more courageous! In my opinion, don’t follow fashion if you’re a fan of a certain colour and have fawned over said colour for years then DO IT!!! For me this is sage/dirty green – I have adored this colour for years and now that we're about to start renovating our first home it will feature within my joinery selections. If you’re not brave enough for full colour then using two-tone joinery could be a good compromise – i.e., the island unit could pick out a bolder colour and remember:  “Creativity takes courage “– Henri Matisse. And if that also scares you then stick to the neutral palette but add some texture – fluted paneling or something along those lines that can add depth to the scheme.”
