Contemporary vs Modern Style Kitchens: What's the Difference?

First things first, what’s the difference between contemporary and modern style kitchens? Well, while both styles embody a sense of simplicity and clean lines, contemporary design refers to what’s current and innovative and is often constantly evolving. Unlike other styles that are usually focused on a particular look or period, contemporary style really just refers to what’s happening in the interior design world today.

In contrast, modern design refers to a specific era (mid-20th century) and is characterised by its minimalism and natural materials. Contemporary kitchens, therefore, while they may borrow elements from the modern era, are not restricted by it, often featuring state-of-the-art materials, technology, and design ideas.

“Don’t be afraid to use colour! If I had a dollar for every time a client says something along the lines of -“Oh, I’d really love to do a blue kitchen, but I am worried about property resale value”. They then end up playing it super safe with their colour selections and 9 out of 10 times at project completion wish they had been more courageous! In my opinion, don’t follow fashion if you’re a fan of a certain colour and have fawned over said colour for years then DO IT!!! For me this is sage/dirty green – I have adored this colour for years and now that we're about to start renovating our first home it will feature within my joinery selections. If you’re not brave enough for full colour then using two-tone joinery could be a good compromise – i.e., the island unit could pick out a bolder colour and remember:  “Creativity takes courage “– Henri Matisse. And if that also scares you then stick to the neutral palette but add some texture – fluted paneling or something along those lines that can add depth to the scheme.”

3. Contemporary Kitchen Appliances

Technological advancements have completely revolutionised kitchen appliances, with contemporary kitchens featuring smart, energy-efficient, and sleek designs. Integrated appliances that blend into the cabinetry, induction cooktops, and multi-functional ovens are becoming standard. Smart refrigerators that can help manage groceries and recipes, and even coffee machines that remember your favourite almond latte, are elevating the functionality of contemporary kitchens to new levels.

4. Contemporary Kitchen Benchtops

Benchtops in contemporary kitchens have become more than just about durability but also about making a style statement. Natural stone and quartz are popular for their wide range of colours and patterns, as well as their resistance to scratches and heat. Concrete and stainless steel are also on the rise, appealing to those who favour a cool-toned look, while ultra-thin profiles are gaining popularity for a sleek, minimalist aesthetic.

5. Contemporary Kitchen Tapware and Sinks

In a contemporary kitchen, tapware and sinks are not just practical components. They’re aesthetic, chic, and always strategically chosen to create cohesion within the space. The rise of minimalist design has seen an increase in sleek, streamlined tapware with innovative features, such as touchless operations. Did you know you can even get sparkling water taps installed in your kitchen? Yes, please! Materials such as stainless steel, brushed brass and brushed nickel are popular choices with so many different styles, including contemporary kitchens. They offer durability and also suit a range of different sinks.

When it comes to sinks, large, single-basin models are favoured for their practicality and sleek appearance, often paired with accessories like cutting boards and colanders for enhanced functionality. Undermount sinks continue to be a preferred choice for their seamless integration with countertops, contributing to the clean lines and clutter-free surfaces that are key elements of contemporary kitchen design.

Recessed LED lights offer a clean, streamlined look for general lighting, while pendant lights over islands or dining areas add a focal point and opportunity for some stylish expression. Under-cabinet lighting not only provides essential task lighting but also adds depth and warmth to the kitchen. Smart lighting systems, which allow you to control the light intensity and colour temperature, are increasingly popular, enabling the kitchen's ambiance to be adjusted to suit different times of day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a contemporary style kitchen?

What's trending in kitchens 2024?

In 2024, kitchen design trends continue to emphasise functionality, sustainability, and personalisation. The latest trends include:

Sustainable Materials: Eco-friendly materials are more popular than ever, with a focus on recyclable and renewable resources.

Smart Kitchens: Advanced technology integration for enhanced convenience and efficiency, including smart appliances and voice-controlled systems.

Natural Elements: Incorporating natural light, plants, and materials like wood and stone to create a calming, biophilic environment.

Bold Colours: While neutral tones remain popular, there's a shift towards bold and vibrant colours, particularly in accents and splashbacks.

Multi-functional Spaces: Kitchens that serve multiple purposes, including dining, working, and socialising, with flexible layouts and furnishings.

Minimalist Designs: Clean lines, decluttered spaces, and minimalist aesthetics continue to dominate, with hidden storage solutions and integrated appliances.

What is the perfect kitchen layout?

The perfect kitchen layout entirely depends on your personal preferences, such as your lifestyle, the layout of your home, and how you’ll use your kitchen. However, the most efficient kitchens are often designed around the classic work triangle principle, which organises the sink, refrigerator, and stove at three points to minimise unnecessary movement.  For larger kitchens, adding an island can improve functionality and provide additional workspace and storage. Open-plan layouts are also popular, blending the kitchen with living and dining areas to create a more social and versatile space.

At the end of the day, the perfect layout is one that combines efficiency, comfort, and your personal taste.

What are the six basic kitchen designs?

The six basic kitchen designs are foundational layouts that cater to various space sizes and shapes, each with its unique advantages:

Single-Wall: Ideal for small spaces, all appliances and cabinets are aligned along one wall.

Galley: Efficient for narrow spaces, with cabinets and appliances on two parallel walls.

L-Shape: Versatile layout suitable for small to medium kitchens, with cabinets placed on two perpendicular walls.

U-Shape: Offers ample storage and workspace, with cabinets and appliances arranged on three adjoining walls.

Island: Adds additional workspace and storage, suitable for larger, open-plan kitchens. It can be integrated into L-shape, U-shape, and single-wall kitchens.

Peninsula (or G-Shape): Similar to the island layout but with the island connected to the rest of the kitchen, providing a compact but efficient working area and often used to create a natural barrier between the kitchen and living spaces.

Each design has its strengths and can be tailored to fit specific requirements, making the kitchen both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
