8 Trending Indoor Plants You Need in Your Home in 2022

If there is one thing that’s hot right now, it has to be indoor plants. Whether it’s due to the fact that the past lockdowns have made you a pandemic plant parent (because let’s be honest, we all needed something to distract us in lockdown and caring for a plant will definitely do that) or you’ve been an avid indoor plant lover since as long as you can remember, one thing that’s for sure is that indoor plants are sticking around for 2022. Coming in many different shapes and sizes, there certainly isn’t a lack of choice when it comes to choosing what indoor plant or plants you might like to include in your home. From the ever-trending monstera or the Instagramable fiddle leaf fig, we’ve gathered 8 indoor plants that we think you must have in your home this year.

But before we go any further, and just in case you needed any more persuasion that indoor plants are a must-have in your home, we thought we’d share a few of the incredible benefits that indoor plants have on our health.

Research suggests that indoor plants actually provide a better quality of air as they remove some of the bad toxins contained in the air. With that being said, different types of indoor plants have different qualities, such as the ficus’ ability to neutralize chemicals or the peace lily’s ability to purify the air. When looking for specific health benefits of indoor plants, it’s best you research them individually and find which best suits you.

It’s also been found that indoor plants increase productivity and your overall mood. This may be due to the fact that it reminds us of being outside in nature and produces positive endorphins or memories. This is super helpful if you’re currently working from home and need some positivity and inspiration in your home office. Another great thing about indoor plants is that they make for great styling pieces. Whether you’re needing a bit of a boost or you’re looking for ways to add some life to your home, indoor plants will become your best friend.

So, now that you know the health benefits of indoor plants, you’re probably wanting to know where to start when it comes to knowing which to include in your home. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. As mentioned earlier, we’ve put together a list of the top 8 indoor plants we think you need to include in your home this year.

1. Monstera

Monstera plants are tropical indoor plants that originated from the Araceae family. They are often called ‘Swiss Cheese Plants’ due to their striking resemblance to this cheese (if the splits and holes in their leaves didn’t give it away). Found in the wild, monstera plants can grow to massive heights. Therefore, if you’re planning on adding a monstera into your home, make sure to place it in an area where it can grow and accommodate its height – perhaps by a window or where there is a tall ceiling void. If you just don’t have the height and space in your home to grow a tall, full-sized monstera, why not trim off a few stems and place these in a beautiful clear vase. You can also propagate your monstera into multiple different pots if it grows too large.

2. Peace Lily

The peace lily plant is one of the most popular indoor plants. Loved for its emerald-green foliage and white flowery steams, the peace lily is a great indoor plant choice for someone who is looking for a low-maintenance plant that doesn’t require too much sunlight. Peace lilies grow between 20-70cm and can grow in virtually any indoor situation. The one thing to watch out for? The peace lily is mildly poisonous to dogs and cats so perhaps place it away from their reach if you have any furry friends in your home.

3. Lady Palm

Another extremely popular indoor plant choice is the beloved Lady Palm. Best placed in larger areas, such as your living room, the lady palm grows best in bright, indirect light. The stems of the lady palm are fan-shaped, narrow and glossy green in colour and are a beautiful indoor plant choice if you prefer a more elegant, simple look in your home. One thing to note with this particular type of indoor plant is that it has a slow growth rate. This is good to know before buying so you can either choose to buy a larger, already grown lady palm or whether you’re happy to watch it come to life and buy a smaller, baby lady palm.

4. Pothos (Devil’s Ivy)

Pothos, otherwise known as Devil’s Ivy, is an indoor plant we’re sure you would have come across while scrolling through your Instagram or Pinterest feed. Known for their cascading and flowing leaves, we’d have to say that this is one of our favourite indoor plant choices when it comes to styling with it in your home. Want to know how this adorable heart-shaped leaf plant got its nickname Devil’s Ivy? From the fact that it's almost impossible to kill. Often being found in tropical forests, the pothos plant can survive in shady areas, which is good news if your home doesn’t have a lot of natural light. Similar to the peace lily, the pothos plant is poisonous if consumed by humans or animals. This plant is best kept on a bookshelf or in areas out of reach.

5. Rubber Plant

Rubber plants are one of the easiest and most durable indoor plants to look after. Rubber plants prefer to be positioned somewhere where it is bright but not in direct sunlight. Unlike the lady palm or peace lily, the rubber plant is a darker green, sometimes even burgundy, in colour. This is often nice if you are mixing and styling with multiple indoor plants and want to have a range of varying colours. If you are looking for a plant that is super low maintenance and that you can easily keep alive then the rubber plant is the perfect indoor plant for you.

6. Fiddle Leaf Fig

It wouldn’t be an indoor plant guide without including the famous fiddle leaf fig. Like the monstera, the fiddle leaf fig is one of the most popular choices when it comes to indoor plants. If we’re being honest, the fiddle leaf fig seems to be a bit of a hit-and-miss when it comes to keeping them healthy. Some tend to grow expansively and easily, while others struggle to see much growth at all. This really comes down to how well you care if it and the conditions it’s placed in. While they aren’t one of the easiest indoor plants to care for, they are certainly worth the TLC they require. Best placed in a position in your home that doesn’t have direct sunlight, the fiddle leaf fig also loves when you regularly wipe its leaves to ensure it's free of any dust and can absorb the sunlight (yes, it’s a bit precious like that but totally worth it…).

7. Succulents

Possibly the easiest plant to care for is the beloved succulent plant. Succulents are plants that are thick and fleshy due to their retention of water. Succulents tend to grow best in dry conditions, but with that being said they are known to be one of the hardiest plants that will possibly grow anywhere. The exception to that is they do not like cold climates (which makes them perfect for indoor plants right?). One of our favourite features of succulents is their ability to easily propagate. That means that if your friend has a succulent, you can pop over and take a trimming and then replant this in a pot in your home and voila, you have yourself your very own succulent.

8. String of Pearls

And last, but not least, is the adorable string of pearls. Similar to the pothos, the string of pearls is a hanging plant that quite literally looks like a string of pearls. Perfect for placing inside baskets and smaller pots or planters, the string of pearls works really nicely for when used as a styling piece on a bookshelf or somewhere where their gorgeous, vines can dangle and show-off.
