Style Sourcebook Profile: Kimmy Hogan

We’re sure you’re familiar with artist Kimmy Hogan and her free-flowing botanical artworks. But what you may not know is that recently Kimmy and her family (complete with a husband, three boys, and a dachshund), embarked on an incredible journey to create their forever home. Renovating the weatherboard home in regional Victoria was about more than just building a space to live in, but a home uniquely personalised to suit their family.

Come with us as we sit down with Kimmy to learn more about the details behind her inspiring family home and discover her best tips for styling art and creating your own dream space.

“It’s textural, tonal, classic, creative and perfectly ‘lived in’- like it’s always been here.”

- Kimmy Hogan

The first thing we noticed about Kimmy’s home is how incredibly warm and inviting it is (the second was her artwork, of course). The original home was stripped back, rearranged, and replaced, but not as you would normally expect a renovation to be. Kimmy and her family were passionate about keeping the bones classic and respectfully paying homage to the era of the original dwelling. To achieve this, they opted for a ‘lived-in’ feeling with the inclusion of plenty of character and personal touches that suited their lifestyle.

Take the master bedroom, for instance. The original plan was to opt for a smaller room with an additional living room beside it. However, the family decided to remove the separating wall. This instead turned the area into a spacious master bedroom with enough room to fit a sitting area that can also be used for family sleepovers or even reformer Pilates.

The aesthetics of the home is a beautiful blend of classic interior design mixed with European influences and a grounded palette. It’s mostly a blank canvas home, a strategic choice giving Kimmy endless opportunities to style it, mixed with quirky additions, such as checkered tiles. It’s timeless, yet vibrantly full of life, achieving that personalisation for her growing family.

Part of the vibrancy is Kimmy’s own artwork. These striking pieces bring a unique element to each space, adding visual interest and a refreshing atmosphere. Being an artist, we just had to ask Kimmy how she chose the art pieces to feature, and why. Her response? “Do what makes your heart sing. With art, people can get caught up in the criteria but instead, they should do whatever they like and buy pieces they love. Art comes first, you can always figure out where it goes later. This is how you’re home evolves and reflects you”. We couldn’t agree more.

That’s really what this renovation was about to Kimmy and her family, making the home truly theirs. Working with a fantastic local builder, Arca Build, Kimmy felt empowered to create a personal space reflective of her family’s lifestyle. Encouraging others to do the same, Kimmy emphasised the importance of expressing yourself through your interiors. “Don’t feel you have to stick to what’s expected within a home. Instead, inject your personality and style into the space while considering things like natural light and adding colour”, notes Kimmy.

And finally, we couldn’t sit down with Kimmy without getting some practical advice for styling art within your home. “Getting the size of the piece, and the height you hang it, is important. I’d say avoid placing a smaller piece on a large wall, and vice versa. You also don’t want to hang it too high, I recommend eye height, or if it’s above furniture, aim for 10-20 cm so the artwork can feel nested within the space.”

We’re in complete awe of Kimmy’s inspiring family home, and of course, her incredible art pieces. You can now include Kimmy Hogan’s artwork in your own mood board projects, using the Style Sourcebook mood board tool. We can’t wait to see how you use these incredible pieces in your upcoming projects.
